It’s not the QB that counts for JM
Taft Coghill reports in today’s Free Lance-Star that James Monroe quarterback DeMontaz Brown won’t be available for Friday’s Region I, Division 3 playoff game at Bruton.
Brown’s development has been fun to watch this fall. He was a big question mark before the season started, because of his inexperience, but I think he’s grown into a very servicable Battlefield District quarterback. I could see him eventually emerging as a more-athletic John Jackson–the quarterback that helped James Monroe capture its state title two years ago.
So without Brown, are the Jackets sunk?
The true keys for James Monroe are its defense, and running back Mike Latney.
Only three teams have scored more than 6 points against the Jackets this fall–Mountain View (24) and Courtland (28) in JM’s two defeats, and Eastern View (35), when JM had already built a huge lead.
As for Latney: He had 38 rushing yards against Mountain View and 109 on 19 carries (5.7 per run) against Courtland. In JM’s eight other games, he’s averaging 133.65 yards per game, and 8.4 yards per rush.
So yeah, I’ll go out on that limb: If Mike Latney tops 100 yards for James Monroe on Friday, the Jackets win; if Latney can’t get going …
