Who’s going to win, who’s going to lose …
I hate picking games. … mostly because it seems to make easy ammunition to shoot back at us!
But I’ll compromise with a pair of picks for this Friday’s area football games: Mostly likely to win, and most likely to lose:
MOST LIKELY TO WIN: Colonial Forge over Franklin County
The Eagles should have all the the motivation they need by thinking back to the 2009 playoffs.
Franklin County was the No. 6 seed and Colonial Forge the No. 3 last year, when Colby Boone kicked a 33-yard field goal in the final seconds to give Franklin County a 37-35 win.
Colonial Forge has already avenged its first 2009 loss by beating Woodbridge earlier this fall. Now the Eagles can go for payback, Part 2.
Franklin County’s two big weapons are running back Alex Keys (1,023 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns), and WR Shane Preston (37 catches, 15 for touchdowns). Preston caught one pass in the 2009 playoff game for 33 yards.
MOST LIKELY TO LOSE: Eastern View at Powhatan
The good news for Eastern View: The Cyclones are in the playoffs thanks to a Lafayette player who didn’t have a physical on file - a violation the Rams self-reported to the VHSL.
The bad news for Eastern View: Its playoff Lazarus act has the Cyclones touching down at Powhatan.
The Indians have won 56 straight games in the poor Southside District. I was there last year to see Powhatan pull away from a pretty good Chancellor team in last year’s Region I, Division 4 championship game.
The one common opponent between Powhatan and Eastern View is Caroline – a 44-0 win for Powhatan, and a 21-0 win for Eastern View.
