Robert Griffin III Runs Two Miles As Recovery Continues

The quarterback continued to progress with his recovery from torn ligaments in his right knee when he ran two miles during one of the Redskins’ spring workouts earlier this week.

ASHBURN – Robert Griffin III ran two miles earlier this week as he progresses in his rehabilitation from right knee surgery.

Griffin said last week that the next two milestones remaining in his recovery are cutting and explosive sprinting. He did both to some degree during an on-field workout at Redskins Park on Thursday, finishing his afternoon by running from sideline to sideline with tight ends Fred Davis and Jordan Reed.

“That’s been the good part,” Griffin said, “but I’m still trying to stay focused on not just the rehab part, but also paying attention, getting the mental reps and just knowing it like the back of my hand.”

Griffin threw passes to other injured players at the start of the team’s voluntary workout Thursday morning, though unlike last week, he mixed in five- and seven-step drops and also occasionally rolled out of the pocket and ran read-option fakes.

The quarterback underwent surgery to repair the ACL, LCL and medial meniscus in his right knee in early January and is targeting a return for the start of the Redskins’ season on Sept. 9, though he’s optimistic he can be ready at the start of training camp in late July.

If he can work back to a full range of motion by the time the team wraps up minicamp in mid-June, he’ll have six weeks of complete mobility to prepare for a return to football.

“Everyone gets to see the flowers and roses side of it – out here, running, throwing, feeling a little energy, having a bounce in your step, but you know, I’ve had to be patiently aggressive this entire time just letting my body heal and being aggressive where I can,” Griffin said. “This next month will be the month where I start doing the explosive sprinting and the explosive cutting, and it will be good to have that … this month and next month before camp so that I’m ready to go.”
