Pierre Garcon Still Deciding Whether To Undergo Right Foot Surgery

By ZAC BOYER | zboyer@freelancestar.com

Pierre Garçon is still weighing a decision on whether to undergo surgery on his right foot, according to a person with knowledge of the Washington Redskins receiver’s health.

That person, who was not authorized to speak publicly about Garçon’s situation, said he is leaning toward simply resting the foot but should make an official decision in the coming weeks.

Garçon tore the plantar plate in the second toe of his right foot in the season opener at New Orleans and missed six games, but still finished with a team-high 633 yards and four touchdowns on 44 catches. His 14.4 yards per catch was still the second-highest average in his five seasons.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said near the end of the season that Garçon would seek additional opinions from specialists before making a decision. Garçon has never undergone surgery and is not keen on having a procedure on the foot, which he said would take three to four months to heal but would offer no guarantee of fixing the issue.

The tear in the plantar plate affected Garçon’s ability to push off at the line of scrimmage and impacted his ability dig his foot into the ground and cut. He tried to return after missing two games early in the season but was largely ineffective, at which point he was advised by the team’s medical staff to keep all weight off the foot.

Garçon was the Redskins’ marquee addition in free agency a year ago after signing a five-year, $42.5 million contract after spending four seasons in Indianapolis.
