Alfred Morris Earns Weekly Fan Awards, Joins Robert Griffin III As Rookie Finalist
ASHBURN – Alfred Morris was named the recipient of the Pepsi Max Rookie of the Week and FedEx Ground Player of the Week awards on Friday, each of which are decided though online fan voting.
Morris ran 33 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns, all season highs, in the Washington Redskins’ 28-18 victory over Dallas on Sunday. The victory helped the Redskins, who won their final seven games of the regular season, qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years and win the NFC East for the first time since 1999.
By being honored as the FedEx Ground Player of the Week, FedEx will make a $2,000 donation in Morris’ name to the Washington branch of Junior Achievement, which educates youth on how to grow and develop a small business.
Morris was chosen as the top rookie for the third time this season and a Redskins rookie has won the award after 11 of 17 weeks, including each of the last seven. Quarterback Robert Griffin III won the award seven times, while quarterback Kirk Cousins won it once.
Both Morris and Griffin have qualified as finalists for the Pepsi Max Rookie of the Year award, which is also fan-driven and will be announced during Super Bowl weekend. Other finalists include Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson and Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin.
