Will Montgomery Fined For Kicking Giants’ Linval Joseph During Fumble Recovery
ASHBURN – The NFL fined Washington Redskins center Will Montgomery and New York Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph for their brief altercation during a fumble recovery Monday night.
Montgomery was fined $10,000 by the league, which he said he plans to appeal. Joseph was fined $7,875.
The two players were trying to recover the football following Redskins running back Alfred Morris’ fumble with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter. Montgomery was on the bottom of the pile when Joseph pulled him out by his left leg; Montgomery, on his back, kicked Joseph in his right shin, while Joseph went to step forward and stomp on Montgomery’s chest before stopping.
Officials penalized both teams for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after the play, which offset.
“I think I have to protect myself,” Montgomery said Friday. “A guy’s dragging me across the ground and potentially twisting my ankle or whatever else. I’m not going let a guy drag me. And I can’t push him, obviously, because I’m on the ground, so I used my leg to get him off me.”
