No Additional Inflammation Found As Pierre Garçon Has Toe Examined

ASHBURN – Pierre Garçon visited a foot specialist in Charlotte on Wednesday to evaluate the inflammation in his right foot that has lingered since the Washington Redskins’ season opener on Sept. 9.

Garçon visited Robert Anderson, who, according to head coach Mike Shanahan, has been in constant discussion with the receiver regarding the second toe in his right foot. Anderson also performed surgery on tight end Fred Davis’ left Achilles’ tendon on Wednesday, which he tore in the Redskins’ road loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.

According to a source who had been informed about Garçon’s meeting, the receiver was told he has not incurred any additional damage to the plantar plate, or capsule, in his toe, but it will require rest that could keep him out potentially until after the Redskins’ Nov. 11 bye week.

The issue would not be so bothersome if it happened to a player at any other position, but because receivers rely upon their burst at the line of scrimmage, pushing off on the toe does cause Garçon significant pain.

There is potential that, at some point, Garçon may need surgery on the toe to correct the issue, the source said. For now, the receiver has chosen to attempt to rest it.

“I thought it would be good for him to go down there and actually talk to the doctor, and the doctor to see him and talk to him about where he’s at,” Shanahan said. “There’s nothing like those one-on-one situations.”

Shanahan said he met with Garçon on Tuesday to gauge the receiver’s health. Garçon was asked to spend Thursday and Friday off his feet and had been working out in a pool to remain in shape.

“He said he hadn’t improved at all,” Shanahan said. “Just for peace of mind, I said, ‘Hey, why don’t you go talk to the specialist? … You get a chance to go one-on-one and see what he says, and hopefully something positive comes out of it.”
