ASHBURN – Mike Shanahan was stern in saying Monday the Washington Redskins will not have any other kickers visit the team’s facility after Billy Cundiff missed three of his four attempts against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Cundiff

The one field goal Cundiff did make, however, was a 41-yard attempt that gave the Redskins a 24-22 victory over the Buccaneers.

“We’re not gonna work out any kickers this week,” the head coach said Monday before the topic of conversation quickly changed.

What that exactly means for Cundiff is uncertain. The Redskins released Neil Rackers on Aug. 27, and Shanahan did not make any definitive commitment to incumbent Graham Gano when asked shortly thereafter about keeping the job. Gano was released by the Redskins on Aug. 29, and Cundiff was signed.

Cundiff missed a 41-yard attempt wide right in the second quarter on Sunday, dropped a 57-yard attempt just short on the final play before halftime and then pushed a 31-yard attempt wide left in the fourth quarter.

He returned to make a 41-yard attempt with two seconds remaining, barely tucking it inside the right upright.

“It was really big, because looking around, it was very disappointing to know that when the game comes down to the end, you look up at the scoreboard and I miss kicks and we’re down by one, and I know that I could have been the difference – that’s a tough pill to swallow,” Cundiff told reporters after the game. “These guys work really hard, and I get very few chances, but I’ve got to take advantage of the situations and the chances that I do get. I know that if it comes down to the very end like it did, I’ve got to capitalize on it to let these guys know that they can trust me when it counts.”

Cundiff made all four field goal attempts in the season-opener at New Orleans on Sept. 9, but he missed his only attempt at St. Louis on Sept. 16 – a 62-yarder that was well short and to the right – and made a 36-yarder against Cincinnati on Sept. 23.

The misses leave Cundiff 6-for-10 on the season, and he has made just one of his last 12 attempts from more than 50 yards over his last 48 games, which dates back to the 2005 season.
