Robert Griffin III Named NFC Offensive Player Of The Week
ASHBURN – Robert Griffin III was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday after the Washington Redskins defeated New Orleans 40-32 in the season opener.
Griffin, also a nominee for the league’s Rookie of the Week award, completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns. He was the first player in NFL history to throw for at least 300 passing yards and two touchdowns and the first rookie to have a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating in the first half of his first game, and he trailed only Carolina’s Cam Newton for the most passing yards by a rookie quarterback in Week 1 in NFL history.
The quarterback became the first Redskins player to win the award since running back Clinton Portis did so in Week 5 in 2008 and was the first Redskins rookie to earn the honor since receiver Rod Gardner did so in Week 6 in 2001.
