UCLA To Name Redskins Assistant Lou Spanos As Defensive Coordinator

By ZAC BOYER | | @ZacBoyer

Washington Redskins linebackers coach Lou Spanos is expected to be named the defensive coordinator at UCLA, a team source confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Spanos was with the Redskins for the past two seasons, joining the team when head coach Mike Shanahan was hired after spending 15 years as a defensive assistant in Pittsburgh.

Jim L. Mora, formerly the head coach in Seattle and Atlanta, took over as the Bruins’ head coach on Dec. 10, marking the first time UCLA hired a head coach without ties to the program in over four decades. The hiring fills the last assistant coaching spot open on Mora’s staff.

Spanos’ departure marks the third Redskins assistant to leave the program since the season ended. Wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell and safeties coach Steve Jackson will not return next year, while former Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris was hired by the team a week ago.

The Los Angeles Times first reported Spanos’ hiring.
