The award, given by Athletes In Action, honors one NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community. Philadelphia cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and Dallas tight end Jason Witten were also finalists for the award.
Fletcher, 36, finished with a league-high 166 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, as well as three forced fumbles and two interceptions for the Redskins. As an alternate, he was selected earlier this week to the NFC Pro Bowl. He established the London’s Bridge Foundation in 2003, which promotes health, fitness, education and leadership amongst underprivileged children.
Darrell Green, who received the award in 1996, was the last player from the Redskins to be honored. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was the recipient last season. It is named after former quarterback Bart Starr, who was recognized for his positive contributions amongst his teammates and community.
