Redskins draft Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan at No. 16
After trading down six spots in the first round, the Redskins passed on quarterbacks Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallet and Colin Kaepernick to select Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan.
We should find out later tonight whether the Redskins plan to convert Kerrigan to outside linebacker or keep him up front as a 5-technique defensive end. He measured 6-foot-4, 267 pounds at the combine, which is good size for an outside linebacker.
Draft experts like his motor and his athleticism. He’s quite strong, too. Another big plus is that he creates turnovers. He finished his career at the NCAA’s active leader with 14 fumbles cause.
But Kerrigan’s ability to excel in space is unknown, just as Brian Orakpo’s was two years ago.
The Redskins have the 41st- and 49th-overall picks, which are scheduled for tomorrow night’s second round. However, don’t be surprised if they package those picks in a trade that would get them back into the first round and in position to draft a quarterback.
