Redskins sign free agent CB Phillip Buchanon
The Redskins addressed one of their needs on defense this afternoon by signing free agent cornerback Phillip Buchanon.
Buchanon, 29, was the 17th overall pick in the 2002 draft. The Oakland Raiders selected him after he played his college ball at Miami with teammates with Clinton Portis, Santana Moss and Sean Taylor.
The Redskins are Buchanon’s fifth team since 2004, though. The Raiders traded him to Houston after only three seasons, and he’s since played for Tampa Bay (under Bruce Allen) and Detroit. He started 11 games for the Lions last season.
Buchanon provides a veteran presence at cornerback behind DeAngelo Hall and Carlos Rogers following Fred Smoot’s release on March 4. He’ll likely compete for the nickel spot along with third-year corner Justin Tryon and second-year corner Kevin Barnes. Buchanon also has some experience returning punts (118 in his career for a 9.1-yard average).
