Former heart surgeon at MWH opens varicose vein clinic in Louisiana
Dr. Richard Gitter, the former heart surgeon at Mary Washington Hospital, has returned to his native Louisiana to open a vein clinic.
The Gitter Vein Institute is now open in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. The clinic’s website describes it as a laser center that treats problems with the peripheral venous system. “These include varicose veins, spider veins, vascular malformations and vascular lesions of the face and body,” the website says.
Gitter is board certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery. He arrived in Fredericksburg in March 2011 to lead the hospital’s heart surgery program. He lasted only 10 months, however, before being relieved of his duties by his employer, the University of Virginia Health System.
Gitter declined to comment at the time, as did the university. U.Va. has a contract with Mary Washington to manage its heart surgery program.
