HealthSouth has asked the state for permission to expand.
The rehabilitation hospital has applied for a certificate of public need to add 12 beds. A public hearing on the request will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Salem Church library in Spotsylvania County.
The HealthSouth hospital is a 40-bed facility in the medical-office complex behind Mary Washington Hospital. HealthSouth opened in 2007. If approved, this would be its first expansion.
The hospital offers intensive, inpatient rehabilitation. Patients usually arrive after a stay at an acute-care hospital, such as Mary Washington. Many are recovering from strokes, injuries or surgery. The typical stay is about two weeks.
