Local doctor earns guest spot in NYT
Dr. Frederick Tucker was in an unusual spot Wednesday, next to columnists Thomas Friedman and Maureen Dowd on the op-ed page of the New York Times.
The newspaper published Tucker’s piece, available here, called “Drugs and Profits.” The Fredericksburg oncologist wrote about the lobbying effort by Genentech to get the Food and Drug Administration to approve Avastin for the treatment of breast cancer patients.
In his piece, Tucker called on the FDA to resist the drug maker. He concluded: “Serious progress in the treatment of cancer will not be the result of polemics, lobbying or marketing. Genentech’s money and efforts would be better spent on research for more meaningful treatments for breast cancer.”
