Region’s first geriatrics practice opens

A private medical practice focused exclusively on the care of the elderly has opened in Spotsylvania County.

SeniorCare Geriatric Medical Center is believed to the first practice of its kind in the area. It features two providers who specialize in geriatrics, the branch of medicine that deals with older people.

A physician and nurse practitioner will see patients in their office, located beside Interstate 95 at Cosner’s Corner, or in patient homes and assisted living centers.

“There’s nothing like this here,” said Dana Tate, president and CEO of Dantra Healthcare. Dantra is majority partner in the specialty practice with Mary Washington Healthcare, parent company of Mary Washington and Stafford hospitals.

Dr. Samuel Umesegha, board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics, and Ellie Gibberman, nurse practitioner, are the providers.

The practice, which opened May 1, will care for patients 50 and older, Tate said. Services include evaluations of the elderly, as well as treatment and referrals to community resources.

The opening of the practice will mean the eventual closing of the Senior Care Services program at Mary Washington Hospital. That program also does evaluations and referrals.
