New heart surgeon arrives at MWH

Dr. Richard Gitter

Dr. Richard Gitter began work today as the new cardiovascular surgeon at Mary Washington Hospital.

Gitter arrived in Fredericksburg from Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. He joins Dr. Pyongsoo Yoon, medical director of Mary Washington’s heart surgery program. Yoon has resigned and will depart March 1 to take a job in Memphis.

Gitter attended high school in New Orleans and got his undergraduate degree from Tulane University. He earned his medical degree from Tulane, graduating in 1992. He completed a five-year general surgery residency at Baylor University in Dallas, and a two-year cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Jim, the real story is not the puff piece on the good Dr. Gitter. The real story is how MWH and Dr. Armitage mismanaged the cardiac program for years such that the program never met the minimum requirements for a permanent CON. Dig deeper Jim, but be warned it will require you to conduct interviews and do research. Leave your laptop at home, bring a pencil and legal pad.

The culture at Mary Wash makes it difficult to build successful programs….the surgeons have carte blanche, big salaries, and no productivity standards. The joke around the hospital “Where do you find a trauma surgeon?”

Well, the reason that the MWH docs can spend time in the lounge is that the physician assistants are hired to tdo all the work. Kinda upside down on the quality scale, but this is the culture. If our floors had the same staffing levels that the docs get, we wouldn’t have the quality score issues that get reported thru this venue. Maybe the board should be looking at this data.
