Flu shots and booze

Judging by the number of phone calls they received earlier this week at the Virginia ABC store on William Street in Fredericksburg, there is a lot of interest in the Health Department’s free flu shot program.

Booze and flu shots don’t normally go together, though they were linked on Tuesday when we ran a story in the newspaper about Saturday’s free flu shot clinic at the Health Department. The story included an incorrect phone number for the Fredericksburg Health Department. Turns out the phone number listed was for the local ABC store. A clerk at the store called that morning and said, “Help, we’re getting a lot of calls from people asking about flu shots.”  I apologized to her and corrected the phone number in the online version of the story. We also ran a correction the next day in the newspaper.

So if you want a free flu shot tomorrow, don’t go to the ABC store. Go to the Health Department office at 608 Jackson St. Workers will be there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with 500 doses of vaccine, including 75 doses of  FluMist. No appointment is necessary. Everyone 3 years and older is welcome.

If you can’t make it to tomorrow’s event, the Heath Department will be offering free flu shots at its local offices, beginning next week. The schedule, which includes night clinics, can be found here at the Health District’s Web site.

For more information about either program, call Emily Smith, the Health District’s emergency planner, at 540/899-4797 ext. 103.
