Trauma numbers up from last year
The trauma program at Mary Washington Hospital has published its year-to-date statistics. Through May, volume for the service was up 6 percent, compared to last year.
The number of patients treated was 279, including 57 people who were code orange and 109 who were code yellow, the emergency codes that designate the most serious cases.
Persons injured in motor vehicle crashes were the most frequent users of the trauma service (54 percent). Next were those injured in falls (13 percent) and those with gunshot wounds (7 percent).
Ten trauma patients had to be transferred to other hospitals. These included four pediatric patients, five patients with burns and one with a broken mandible.
