An expensive toothache
My colleague Frank Delano did a good job of showing how those who do not have medical insurance cost us all.
Frank did two stories that appeared in our paper yesterday and today. They focused on a Westmoreland County laborer who had a bad tooth. The tooth became infected, requiring emergency care. The man did not have insurance and eventually accumulated bills totaling almost $44,000.
Much of that charge will be written off as charity care or bad debts by the people who took care of him. Ultimately, all of us will pay for it through taxes or higher prices for the medical care we receive.
