National Park Service Regional Director Dennis R. Reidenbach has named Tarona Armstrong as acting superintendent of George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Wesmoreland County, Va., and Thomas Stone National Historic Site in Charles County, Md.

Mike Caldwell, deputy director of the agency’s 13-state Northeast Region, announced the appointment in an interview with The Free Lance-Star late Wednesday.

On an interim basis, Armstrong, a native of Marianna, Ark., will replace predecessor Lucy Lawliss, who became superintendent of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park last month.

John Storke, a native of Virginia’s Northern Neck who served as interim superintendent this summer, remains the permanent administrative officer of the two Colonial-era historic sites and is “a valued member of the NPS team,” Caldwell said.
