Airing right now on C-SPAN3 television, both on cable and on the World Wide Web:
Top-ranked Civil War historians, led by Edward L. Ayres of the University of Richmond, discuss President Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation (in its 150th anniversary year), the war, and the possibility that slavery would have continued after the war, had the conflict gone differently.
Their conversation, hosted at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, features Ayres, Gary Gallagher of the University of Virginia, Eric Foner of Columbia University, Christy Coleman of the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar in Richmond, and Thavolia Glymph of Duke University.
