George Washington Birthplace closed by Irene

Fallen trees blanket the lawn beside the colonial kitchen at George Washington National Monument in Westmoreland County.

Extensive tree damage and power loss from Hurricane Irene has closed George Washington Birthplace National Monument until further notice, the National Park Service says.

Downed trees and power lines obstruct Popes Creek Road, the approach to the national monument.

The Park Service asks that “the public stay away and not access any areas of the park until work crews are able to clear these downed trees and restore power,” chief ranger Wayne Rose emailed.

Until power is restored, the monument’s telephone information line isn’t working, Rose wrote.

But information on the park will be kept up to date on its website and Facebook and Twitter sites.
