Darrell L. Collins, author of “Major General Robert E. Rodes of the Army of Northern Virginia: A Biography,” will be signing copies of his book at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center today (May 20) from 1 to 4 p.m.

Collins’ book won the 2009 Douglas Southall Freeman Award as the best book on Southern history, and was a finalist for the 2008 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Book Award.

Rodes, a native of Lynchburg and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, is considered one of Robert E. Lee’s best division commanders. He fought in all four Fredericksburg area battles and had prominent roles at Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. Rodes was killed at Third Winchester and died on Sept. 19, 1864.

Collins, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., is the author of several books on the Civil War. The book-signing will be held at the Chancellorville Visitor Center at 9001 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553. For more information, call 540/786-0759.
