Rodes biographer to visit Chancellorsville on Friday

Darrell L. Collins, author of “Major General Robert E. Rodes of the Army of Northern Virginia: A Biography,” will be signing copies of his book at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center on Friday, May 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. ‘
Collins’ volume was the 2009 winner of the Douglas Southall Freeman Award, named the best book on Southern history. It was a finalist for the 2008 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Book Award.
Rodes, a native of Lynchburg and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, is considered one of Robert E. Lee’s best division commanders. He fought in all four Fredericksburg-area battles and played prominent roles at Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. Rodes was killed at Third Winchester and died on Sept. 19, 1864.
Collins, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., is the author of several books on the Civil War. The book-signing will be held on the Chancellorsville battlefield at 9001 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553. For information, call 540/786-0759.
