Kaine runs ad on energy

A day after releasing an ad comparing his and Republican George Allen’s fiscal records, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine is out with another new ad today.

This one focuses on Kaine’s energy plan and touts his support as governor for a clean-coal plant in Wise in Southwest Virginia.

It shows Kaine flying in a helicopter over the plant and talking about energy innovation.

“This state-of-the-art coal plant in Southwest Virginia, where my wife’s from, created 2,500 new jobs,” Kaine says in the ad. “As governor, I supported its construction. I also support offshore energy, conservation, and innovative investments in wind and solar, which together employ more than 66,000 Virginians. That’s what I call unleashing our energy potential. I’m Tim Kaine and I approved this message because innovation creates jobs, energy independence, and a cleaner tomorrow.”

Background citations from Kaine’s campaign refer to a 2007 energy bill in the General Assembly with incentives to encourage utility companies to use cleaner energy, including coal.

Allen’s campaign responded by criticizing Kaine’s support for the Obama administration’s EPA regulations.

“The Wise County plant could not be opened under the job-destroying EPA regulations that Tim Kaine’s liberal environmentalist allies cheer while he stands silent,” said the Allen release.

It included a quote from Del. Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City, who said it was more difficult than Kaine suggests to get the 2007 bill past Kaine’s administration.
