Cantor, Powell to debate
The Virginia Chamber of Commerce says House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7th, and his Democratic opponent Wayne Powell will debate at a forum in September.
According to a release from the Chamber, which is hosting the debate, the event will be Sept. 28, at a business location in the district that has yet to be determined.
The debate will focus on economic issues, the Chamber said.
“We are pleased to host this debate and provide a platform for both candidates to address the important issues facing our country and the commonwealth,” said Chamber president Barry DuVal in the release. “It is important that the business community is aware of where the candidates stand on issues that impact the economy.”
Cantor declined to debate his opponent two years ago. A high-profile politician, he had more than $2 million cash on hand in his campaign account as of mid-July.
Powell, an attorney in Richmond who is making his first run for public office, has hired Democratic strategist Dave “Mudcat” Saunders — who specializes in rural, Southern demographics — to guide his campaign. He has held several town hall meetings around the district, which now runs from Henrico up through Culpeper, including all of Spotsylvania, Louisa, Culpeper and Orange counties.
