Police say man tried to lure girl but got jail
A man accused of showing up at a Fredericksburg library earlier this year in hopes of having sex with a 13-year-old girl was indicted this week by a Stafford County grand jury.
Martin Walter Gilbert III, 46, of Fredericksburg is charged with two counts of attempted indecent liberties, two counts of producing child pornography and using a communication system to facilitate sex with a child.
Sheriff’s Maj. David Decatur said Detective Darryl Wells set a trap in early May, when he posted an ad on Craigslist pretending to be a 13-year-old Stafford girl looking for a boyfriend.
Decatur said Gilbert responded to the ad and began communicating with Wells’ phony persona by computer nearly every day for about a month.
Wells repeatedly told Gilbert he was a 13-year-old girl, but received nude pictures and invitations to be introduced to sex, Decatur said.
Gilbert finally arranged to meet the “girl” at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library headquarters in downtown Fredericksburg, Decatur said.
Gilbert showed up on June 3 and was immediately taken into custody by Wells and others. He has been in the Rappahannock Regional Jail ever since.
No trial date has been set.
