Robbers beat man at store in Stafford
A 51-year-old North Carolina man was beaten and robbed at gunpoint outside a Stafford County convenience store late Tuesday, police said.
The victim, who is in the area on business, told police he was attacked by three young men, Sheriff’s Office Maj. David Decatur said. Two of them displayed guns and one actually pulled the trigger several times, but the gun did not fire, the man said.
Decatur said the incident occurred between 10 and 10:30 p.m. at the Kangaroo Express at 34 Prosperity Lane in Garrisonville. The victim said he was putting air in his car tires when a man walked up from behind and shouted for him to empty his pockets.
The victim turned around and had a semiautomatic black handgun pointing in his face, Decatur said. The victim began wrestling with his assailant and the gun fell to the ground.
At that point, a second assailant pointed a revolver at the victim and pulled the trigger several times. The victim said he heard “clicking” noises, but no shot was fired.
The victim said he was then dragged and beaten by all three men. He said he blacked out after being knocked to the ground, Decatur said.
The assailants took about $60 in cash and the victim’s smartphone before running from the scene.
The victim drove himself back to the Suburban Extended Stay Motel on U.S. 1 near Quantico, where he was staying. After getting there, the man said he realized he was more hurt than he had thought and called the Sheriff’s Office.
Decatur said the victim was bleeding from multiple places on his face and body when deputies arrived. He was taken to Stafford Hospital for treatment.
His attackers were described as black males in their 20s. The victim did not get a good look at them, but said one was wearing a white shirt and green shorts.
