Culpeper man held in Spotsy robbery

A Culpeper man has been arrested and charged with the armed robbery Wednesday of a Dollar General Store in Spotsylvania County.

Gary Porter, 46, of Culpeper has been charged on four felony counts, including armed robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said that deputies responded to the Dollar General store in the 6500 block of Jefferson Davis Highway on Wednesday.

Store employees told the deputies that the suspect—wearing a camouflage baseball hat, a red long-sleeve shirt, white/blue plaid shorts and flip–flops—approached the register, brandished a handgun and demanded money.

The clerk complied and turned over the cash from the register drawer, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Video footage of the suspect was recovered from the store, and a description was immediately distributed to surrounding law enforcement agencies, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On Thursday, the Culpeper Police Department contacted the Sheriff’s Office about a person they had detained who may have been involved in the robbery.

He was identified as Porter, who also had arrest warrants in Culpeper County and was wearing clothing identical to that of the robbery suspect, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Porter is being held without bond and has been remanded to the Detention Center.

In a statement, Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger L. Harris commended the cooperative efforts of the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office and the Culpeper Police Department in their apprehension of the suspect and assistance in this case.
