A purse snatcher ran into more resistance than he bargained for after taking purses from two women in downtown Fredericksburg late Thursday, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the man was run down by two other women, who fought the purse snatcher and got the purses back. The man was able to eventually get away from the women, who are friends with the initial victims.

Bledsoe said the four women, who range in age from 29 to 38, are all from Locust Grove in Orange County and had been together at the Capital Ale House on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg.

They had just left the business and were walking to their vehicles in the city parking lot in the 800 block of Sophia Street about 11:40 p.m. They had split into groups of two and were about 40 yards apart from each other when the first victim, who is pregnant, saw a man running toward her and the friend next to her.

She told police she instinctively held her purse tighter, but was knocked to the ground by the force of the man grabbing her purse. The woman bumped her head in the fall and was later treated by rescue workers.

The man also grabbed the second woman’s purse and ran off as the victims screamed.

The other women heard the screams and saw their pregnant friend on the ground. They chased the man and caught him. Bledsoe said one woman knocked him down and the other jumped on top of him and began punching. The man was also kicked in the gut before he was able to break free and begin running again.

The women chased and caught him a second time, Bledsoe said. This time he punched one of them in the face, but the other woman knocked him back down and resumed pounding on him.

The man dropped one of the purses while being beaten, and one of the women took the second purse from him.

He was last seen running empty-handed along Hanover Street toward Caroline Street. Police dogs from the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office arrived and tracked a scent, but were unable to find the man.

The man was described as white, in his early to mid 20s, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds. He had long straight hair that nearly reached his shoulders and he was wearing khaki shorts, a black tank top and a black baseball cap that was turned backwards.

Anyone with information about the incident or the purse snatcher is asked to call city police at 540/373-3122.
