Spotsylvania VRE station ceremony set for Tuesday
A groundbreaking event will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday for the new Virginia Railway Express station in Spotsylvania’s Crossroads Industrial Park off the U.S. 17 Bypass.
Work on the station and a new third set of tracks related to the project has begun, said county spokeswoman Kathy Smith. Construction has yet to start on a 1,500-space parking lot, though.
The county is seeking bids for the parking lot project.
The station is slated to be ready in February, and work on the lot is expected to be completed in July, Smith said.
So, Spotsylvania VRE riders should be able to start using the new station in less than a year.
The original plan was to have the station open by late 2013, but several issues delayed the process. In the most recent holdup, the county couldn’t agree on a price with the property owners for the 25 acres needed for the parking lot.
Spotsylvania eventually asked the Virginia Department of Transportation to intervene. The highway department issued a “certificate of take” in Spotsylvania Circuit Court last month. That allows work on the lot to start.
