A man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he was stealing checks out of a church mailbox in Fredericksburg, police said.
The incident occurred about 4 p.m. at First Christian Church at 1501 Washington Ave. City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said a church member called police after she saw the man taking envelopes containing checks out of the mailbox.
An officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description walking on Princess Anne Street a short time later. The man was detained, and eventually he led the officer to a bush in front of the church where the checks had been stashed.
The checks were written for a total of about $800, police said. It was not immediately clear if they checks written by the church to pay bills or donations to the church.
Deshon Shelton, 27, who has no fixed address, was charged with three counts of felony larceny and two counts of misdemeanor larceny. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
