Man receives 30-year term in stabbing death

A Spotsylvania County man will spend 30 years in prison for the July 2013 fatal stabbing of his stepfather.

David Edward Sealock, Jr., 25, was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, for stabbing 26-year-old Robert Jones at least 11 times.

Jones, who was married to Sealock’s mother, was attacked on July 21 in front of his two young children, ages 4 and 7.

Sealock pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement, which reduced a charge of first-degree murder and dropped a conspiracy charge.

Defense Attorney Terrence Patton argued for a sentence of about 21 years, which would have been within the recommended guidelines. But Judge Joseph J. Ellis ruled in favor of prosecutor Matthew Lowery, who sought the maximum sentence of 40 years.

According to the plea agreement, Sealock and his girlfriend, 29-year-old Michelle Leigh Soderberg, went to a home on Wakeview Drive in Spotsylvania on July 21, 2013, to retrieve some personal items. The couple had been staying there with his mother and stepfather until they were kicked out by Jones.

Sealock told police that when he went to the home, a fight broke out and that Jones punched Soderberg in the head and motioned for a gun. Sealock said he pulled out a folding pocketknife and stabbed Jones in order to escape from the house. He admitted to being highly intoxicated, the plea agreement said.

Sealock and Soderberg, covered in blood, went from house to house to find shelter but were turned away by neighbors, the agreement said.

A blood trail and witnesses led police to a Motel 6 in Stafford County, where the two were located six hours after the stabbing. The murder weapon was found the next day hidden inside an air-conditioning vent in the motel room, the agreement said.

While speaking to Jones’ two young children, Deputy Kevin Walsh discovered that they had both witnessed the attack.

Soderberg will appear in court today. She is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
