Fatal crash claims Caroline man, injures woman

One man died and a woman is fighting for her life following a late Sunday crash in Spotsylvania County, police said.
According to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, someone called 911 before midnight to report a car traveling at a fast rate of speed along Leavells Road.
A deputy observed a vehicle matching the caller’s description pass by at a high rate of speed on the other side of the road, Pearce said.
As the deputy was turning around to catch up to the speeding car, it was approaching the bridge near Open Door Baptist Church and appeared to have lost control, he said.
The car went off of the right side of the road and struck the concrete bridge abutment, he said.
Calvin B. Taylor Jr., 24, of Woodford in Caroline County—and son of Caroline County Supervisor Calvin B. Taylor Sr.—was a passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, 30-year-old Amanda Sullivan of Spotsylvania, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was listed in critical condition on Monday morning.
Pearce said speed appears to be a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation.
