What looked like a tornado over the Central Park area in Fredericksburg Tuesday evening most likely wasn’t, according to local emergency services officials and the National Weather Service.
Several area residents snapped photos shortly before 9 p.m. of what appeared to be a tornado as severe thunderstorms swept through the area.
But there were no reports of tornadoes to 911, according Fredericksburg Police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.
And Carl Barnes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said there were no indications on radar or reports of tornadoes in the area.
“These storms had a ton of wind with them,” he said.
What people saw could have been a scud cloud, Barnes explained. In windy storms, scud clouds hang low and can look like tornadoes when they are sucked back up.
