Divers recovered the body of a 7-year-old girl who drowned Friday while waiting to see a fireworks show at Lake Wilderness.
According to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, first responders received a call about a missing young girl.
A large crowd had gathered in the area for a Fourth of July fireworks show on the lake, he said.
The mother told police the girl and another child had been swimming in the lake near the clubhouse of Lake Wilderness 2, but the girl never returned, Pearce said. The family looked for her for about a half hour before calling 911.
A joint recovery team consisting of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office and the Spotsylvania Fire Departments’s Rescue and Dive Team responded around 8:30 p.m. and searched for the girl, he said.
Her body was recovered by fire department divers in the water around 10:20 p.m. about 50 feet away from the beach, Pearce said.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond and a death investigation will be conducted by Spotsylvania authorities.
Sheriff Roger L. Harris and Deputy Chief Joseph Sposa of the Spotsylvania County
Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management both related in a statement that “though our agencies work closely on matters of this type, it does not diminish the pain and
the tragedy felt by all, at a time like this.”
