Shots were fired at a Mineral man early Wednesday as he drove away from an attempted robbery in the parking lot of a Fredericksburg movie theater, police said.
The incident took place about 12:30 a.m. outside the Regal Fredericksburg 14 at 3301 Plank Road. City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the 31-year-old man and a female friend, 26, had just gotten into his Mercedes at 12:30 a.m.when they were approached by four men.
One man wearing a mask pulled out a handgun and demanded money from the victims. The driver responded by putting the car in gear to drive away.
The masked assailant tried to grab the keys out of the ignition, then fired several rounds as victim drove away, police said.
Neither victim was struck, but there were two bullet holes in the car. Both rounds entered through the rear panels, Bledsoe said.
The victim didn’t report the incident until later that morning, but police got several calls from people in the Plank Road area who heard gunfire. Officers responded to the theater, but the victims and the would-be robbers were all gone by that time.
Two of the assailants were described only as black males, while the race of the other two was unclear.
