Family Fun Day part of medical fundraiser for firefighter
King George County businesses and groups are working together to raise money for a popular firefighter who is battling cancer.
Bob Watts, 55, has been a firefighter most of his adult life, first in Alexandria and currently with the King George Department of Fire and Rescue. He has stage 4 colon cancer and has been traveling as far as Chicago for treatments.
The goal of the fund-raiser, called “Give Bob 5!,” is to raise $5,000 for medical bills.
He and his wife, Cecile, have five children, ages 5 to 20.
“All of his adult life, he has served the community, either [as] a youth mentor or youth leader,” she said in an email. He also served 10 years in missions and took a hiatus from being a firefighter.
A Family Fun Day for him is planned Saturday at the King George Family YMCA from 3 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 per family and include admission, rides, music, games and dinner.
Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, umbrellas and sunscreen and enjoy three live bands.
Activities include a moon bounce, pony rides, games, face painting, snow cones, barbecue by the Potomac Hunt Club, burgers, hot dogs and cold drinks.
Fire and rescue workers will do the cooking and display their fire truck, ambulance and Sparky the fire dog.
Admission and raffle tickets can be purchased at King George Family Chiropractic, King George Fire and Rescue, the Potomac Hunt Club and at the event.
Donations can be mailed to the NSWC Federal Credit Union, Box 519, Dahlgren, Va., 22448, in care of Bob Watts.
