Man accused of attacking child at Spotsylvania campground
A man is in jail, facing charges that he sexually assaulted a 7-year-old boy at knifepoint at an area campground bathroom.
Deputies responded to the Indian Acres Campground at the 6400 block of Morris Road Sunday for a 911 call about a sexual attack on a young child, according to Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.
The caller told police that his 7-year-old son had been attacked by a stranger brandishing a knife in a bathroom near the spot where the victim’s family was camping for the weekend, Pearce said.
When deputies arrived, Indian Acres security had already blocked off the area and began a search of vehicles that matched a description of the pickup truck given by the victim and his brother, Pearce said. The victim also gave a detailed description of the suspect’s clothing.
Deputies and campground security also reviewed surveillance footage and were able to identify the driver of the truck, he said.
The man was located by detectives on Thursday, four days later, in the Indian Acres campground wearing the same clothing that the victim described. He was also carrying a distinctive knife that matched the description the victim gave, Pearce said.
Edward Alsop, 49, is charged with felony aggravated sexual battery and misdemeanor assault and battery. Police say he has no fixed address.
He is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
Indian Acres is located in the Thornburg area of Spotsylvania, about three miles off Interstate 95.
