Culpeper charges man in fatal crash
A 20-year-old Culpeper man was charged with involuntary manslaughter Monday in connection with a Sept. 15, 2013, crash that killed one passenger and injured another.
John H. McDevitt V was driving a 2000 Ford Focus on U.S. 522 toward Culpeper when the vehicle apparently went out of control just east of State Route 633 near Norman.
According to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office report, McDevitt overcorrected, causing the vehicle to spin, hit a ditch and roll. The car then hit a fence, mailbox and planter before coming to rest in a yard.
Jessica Ashley Ruth Johnson, 21, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was ejected during the crash and killed. Her brother, Thomas Anthony Johnson, 18, a rear-seat passenger, was seriously injured.
McDevitt was driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
