A reported barricade situation just south of Madison County High School has closed U. S. 29 in both directions.
The situation began this morning about 8:30 with the report of an “active shooter” but that was later changed to “a barricade situation.” It remains unclear whether shots were actually fired.
Since the incident was within one mile of a school, Madison County High School was reportedly put on lockdown.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police also closed U.S. 29.
While, according to VDOT, traffic has been rerouted along back roads, there are reports of backups for several miles in each direction.
