A King George County man is accused of tying up, raping and robbing a 65-year-old county woman that he once worked for, police said.
Kelvin Arnold Lewis, 52, was arrested at his home on Harbor Court on Sunday, a day after the reported incident, on charges of rape, abduction and robbery, Sheriff Steve Dempsey said.
Deputy Patrick Weston and his police dog, Titan, found the suspect hiding in a closet in the Dahlgren residence.
Dempsey said the reported attack occurred Saturday evening at the woman’s home, which is also in the Dahlgren area. He said the woman, who lives alone, reported that at about 6 p.m. Lewis showed up at her home, asking if he could do some work for her.
The woman had known Lewis for a couple of months, police said, and he had performed home repairs for her in the past.
This time, the woman told him she had no work for him. Police said he then asked if he could use her cellphone and followed her into the home as she went to get it.
Dempsey said the suspect locked the door behind him and physically assaulted the woman, knocking her to the floor, as he demanded money and her credit cards.
The woman tried to fight back, police said, but was tied up and gagged with household tape.
The suspect is accused of raping her, then forcing her to drive him to a nearby ATM, where she withdrew an undisclosed amount of cash and gave it to him, police said.
She then drove the man to his home on Harbor Court and dropped him off.
Police were called and went to Lewis’ home Saturday night, but were unable to find him. They returned to the apartment the next day with a search warrant and found Lewis hiding, police said.
The woman was taken to Mary Washington Hospital shortly after reporting the rape, Dempsey said. Lt. Monty Clift is heading the investigation.
