Donations sought to honor 3 balloon-accident victims
Memorial funds have been created to honor the three victims who died in a hot-air balloon crash in Caroline County last week.
The Meadow Event Park posted the memorial funds on its website yesterday after many requests from ticket holders of last weekend’s planned balloon festival who wanted to make contributions.
Ginny Doyle and Natalie Lewis, key members of the university’s women’s basketball staff, were attending the first event of the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival at the park. They were aboard the balloon when it struck a power line, caught fire and later exploded around 8 p.m.
The pilot of the balloon, Daniel “Captain” Kirk of Starship Adventures, also was killed.
After an intense search, the bodies of Doyle, Lewis and Kirk were found within about 1,500 yards of one another, police said.
Two contribution funds were listed for Kirk.
The Great Eastern Balloon Camp scholarship fund is accepting contributions to the Balloon Federation of America—Junior Balloonist camps, Box 400, Indianola, IA 50125. Make checks payable to Balloon Federation of America: Eastern–Dan Kirk fund.
Donations can also be made to the Hartly United Methodist Church, 85 Main Street, Hartly, DE 19953. Kirk was from Hartly.
