Storms tear through area, knock out power

Hundreds of Fredericksburg-area residents were without power Tuesday night after a string of powerful thunderstorms swept through the area.

In Caroline County, more than 1,000 Rappahannock Electric Cooperative customers lost electricity in the Milford area.

REC spokeswoman Ann Lewis said repair crews were dispatched immediately.

By 10 p.m.—about two hours after the outages—all of the REC customers affected had power restored.

The outages prompted the Caroline County Board of Supervisors to relocate its Tuesday evening meeting to an area with power and air conditioning.

More than 50 REC customers in Essex, Culpeper and Orange counties lost power due to thunderstorms.

Dominion Virginia Power also reported widespread outages. According to the company’s website, more than 400 Spotsylvania County customers were affected.

Dominion could not release a restoration timeline.

The National Weather Service reported a potential for isolated showers and thunderstorms in the region though 1 a.m. Wednesday.
