Grimesey leaving Orange schools

The Orange County Public Schools superintendent has resigned to take the helm of a North Carolina school division.

Robert Grimesey Jr. announced his resignation Monday morning in a closed session of the Orange County School Board. Later that day, he was appointed the superintendent of Moore County Public Schools in Carthage, N.C.

He will retire June 30 and will start the new job on July 1. In a letter to school employees, Grimesey, 57, said that the Moore County job offered an ideal retirement scenario, since his son—who is now serving overseas in the U.S. Air Force—might soon be stationed at nearby Fort Bragg.

“There is nothing that I could ask of each of you that you have not delivered,” Grimesey wrote in the letter to employees. “Your dedication and your friendship have rendered Orange County as a ‘Camelot’ experience for me. Parting from you imposes genuine sadness on what is otherwise a joyous transition to a new and exciting opportunity.”

The Orange County School Board hired Grimesey in 2009 from Allegheny County schools. He also previously served as assistant principal of King George Middle School from 1986–87.

When Grimesey took charge of Orange County schools, the division was in turmoil. The previous superintendent had been fired after three years. During Grimesey’s five years in Orange, the division saw growth in student test scores, reading proficiency and on-time graduation rates.

Grimesey also racked up honors during his time in Orange County.

In 2013, he became the first-ever recipient of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents’ Director’s Award. In 2012, Grimesey received a University of Virginia Curry School of Education Outstanding Alumni Award and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents Region 4 Superintendent of the Year Award.

“He has brought us such a long way in five years and we are very grateful for his leadership. We respect his decision,” School Board Chairwoman Judy Carter said in a press release.
