Contracting firms bid for Stafford fitness facility job
Six general contracting firms submitted bids to build Stafford County’s planned indoor recreation and fitness facility at Embrey Mill.
A.D. Whittaker Construction Inc., Daniel & Co. Inc., Southwood Building Systems Inc., Loughridge & Co. LLC, Gulf Seaboard General Contractors Inc. and Rand Construction Corp. all responded to the county’s request for proposals that ended Friday, according to Deputy County Administrator Keith Dayton.
Dayton said county staff are evaluating the bids and don’t expect to take a recommendation to Stafford’s Board of Supervisors until May 20 at the earliest. He said Loughridge & Co. was the apparent low bidder, with a base bid of $11,985,000.
The bid price includes a substantial amount of site work originally intended to be constructed with the rectangular field complex next to the planned facility off Courthouse Road, Dayton said. The 76,350-square-foot indoor project will include a gym, classrooms, studios for spinning and aerobics, and basketball/volleyball courts.
Last fall, the Stafford Board of Supervisors separately approved a $1.835 million contract with Olympia Swimming Pool Co. to construct the three indoor pools that are planned at the complex—a 50-meter competition pool with eight lanes at 2 meters deep and seating for spectators and competitors, a 25-meter lap pool and a wellness pool.
The facility will be publicly owned, but privately operated.
Locally based Eastern Sports Management and the Rappahannock Area YMCA, along with Aquatic Management Inc. of Atlanta, have submitted proposals to the county to run the indoor recreation facility. Eastern Sports is affiliated with the Fredericksburg Field House.
Stafford officials are now reviewing the proposals. The operator is expected to be chosen in late summer or early fall.
