Spotsylvania County authorities have released a composite drawing of the man who shot a store clerk twice in a robbery last month.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office released the drawing Friday with hopes that it will help identify the man who robbed the Fas Mart store at 11600 Brock Road near State Route 3 in the western part of the county around 3 a.m. on March 8.

poster1000Kelly Wood, a 33-year-old assistant store manager, was working when a man with a dark goatee entered the store.

Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said the man picked up an orange-colored drink and took it to the counter as if to purchase it. When Wood momentarily turned away to get a tin of smokeless tobacco called Grizzly that he requested, the man pulled out a handgun and shot her in the back of the head.

The man grabbed a display case on the counter containing ephedrine-based products and ran out of the store, Pearce said. He didn’t take any cash, Pearce said.

Ephedrine products are commonly used to make methamphetamines, he said.

Wood grabbed the back of her head and tried to flee from the store, but the man shot at her again, striking her in the face, police said.

Despite her wounds, Wood was able to reach the store phone and call 911 before collapsing on the floor, Pearce said.

Wood said she had never seen the man in the store before nor had she provoked him.

“He had every intention of hurting someone,” she said. “It was out of the blue. He had no hesitation. He didn’t say nothing. There was no indication whatsoever that this was going to happen.”

Pearce said police have received hundreds of tips from the public, but have yet to identify the man.

He is described as a white male, approximately 5 foot 6 inches to 5 foot 10 inches tall with a reddish-brown beard or goatee. The beard also had white or gray highlights and hangs down about 2 inches below his chin, Pearce said.

He was wearing a black hoodie-type sweatshirt with khaki-style pants and black gloves.

Wood, who suffered a broken jaw, shattered cheek and intense swelling, will have to undergo multiple facial reconstructive surgeries. She is expected to make a full recovery.

A $10,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to contact the Spotsylvania County Crimesolvers line by calling 540/582-5822 or anonymously by texting SEE911 to CRIMES (274637).
