Stafford youngster dies in Hartwood house fire
A child died in a residential fire Monday afternoon in the Hartwood area of Stafford County, Stafford Assistant Chief Mark Doyle said.
Firefighters received a call for a structure fire on King Daniels Way at 2:19 p.m. and were told en route that someone might be trapped inside, Doyle said.
When firefighters from the Hartwood station arrived, they reported a two story single-family with fire throughout both levels, Doyle said. They also confirmed that a child was still inside. However, because of the excessive heat, fire conditions and a structural collapse, firefighters had to act defensively and could not immediately enter, he said.
Once the fire was under control, they located the child, who had died. Doyle would not give the age or gender of the child or any additional details. The child’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for an autopsy.
The Stafford Fire Marshal’s Office and Stafford Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
The home is located in the Hartwood area, east of U.S. 17.
Smoke from the scene could be spotted from miles away and was reportedly seen from Spotsylvania County.
